The excrements of the fish are instantly being used as nutrition for the plants. To make a long story short, the plants clean the water and the clean water can flow back to the fish.
Compared to all the other kinds of agricultural production, Aquaponics has the lowest consumption of water and is absolutely eco-friendly. Using chemicals for the fish or the plants would instantly destroy the whole ecological balance.
